The Mamos PDF Print E-mail

For centuries, spiritual elders, the Mamos, known in their language as the "Elder Brothers," have carried out monthly rituals in sacred sites throughout the Sierra Nevada, which they call "the Heart of the World," to ensure that the planet is kept in a geo-spiritual balance.

“  ...the world doesn’t have to end; it could go on, but unless we stop violating the earth and nature, depleting The Great Mother of her material energy, her organs, her vitality; unless people stop working against the Great Mother, the world will not last ” Kogi Mamos

For the past two decades, the Mamos have been observing rapid changes in the Heart of the World. They have watched the snowcaps on their sacred peaks shrink over time and have seen the plant life change. They have felt the lower moisture levels in the air and soil and noted the changing migration patterns of the birds and butterflies. They have shared these observations with the tribe, and increasingly with the outside world, with us-the "Younger Brothers."
The younger brother  who has jumped off a mountain and, falling fast, are proclaiming our ability to fly. The  “Younger Brother” is destroying the Earth and causing an ecological imbalance that will affect future generations to come.

In 1988 the Kogi allowed a BBC journalist Alain Ereira to film a documentary about their culture. “The Heart of The World”

In December of 2006, a Columbian doctor working with the tribes invited filmmaker Bruce Weaver to come and visit with four Mamo’s.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is their home and held to be a centre of the entire universe. Their sacred lands are perceived as a metaphysical symbol of cosmic forces within the whole world; an oracle of the natural balance and health of the planet.
Within the sacred mountain live four tribes Kogi, Arhuaco, and Wiwa of people those who call themselves the _Elder Brothers_ of humanity and consider it their mission to care for .Mother Earth. The Kogi, Arhuaco, and Wiwa, are the direct descendants of the Tayrona civilization. The Tayrona culture flourished in Northern Colombia around 1,000 AD. They left behind stunning gold artwork, stone and pottery artifacts and an amazing network of brick roads covering the Sierra Nevada. Their society has changed little in the past five centuries. They survived as a culture because the Kogi focus all their energy on the life of the mind as opposed to the life of a body or an individual. Fundamental to that survival is the maintenance of physical separation from their world and our own
