About The Film Maker - Bruce Weaver

The huge mushroom cloud in the dream was a nuclear plume, foreboding, and filled with unnamed suffering. Bruce was only a child. These disturbing images could not be explained at that age. At seventeen, in the U.S. armed forces, he found himself assigned to load nuclear weapons on B-52 bombers. Dressed in full chemical warfare gear on a training exercise, Bruce’s dreamscape images flooded to his mind in vivid detail. It was then the dream became all too real. Bruce left the Air Force, and began a life of earnest study of spirituality, mythology, and of ancient peoples.

Throughout the 1990’s, Bruce dedicated himself to study, and to travel. Memorable among his journeys, was a vision quest to Prophecy Rock, on Hopi in Northern Arizona. An ancient petro glyph in which a message was transcribed by early Hopi elders: simply, a warning for mankind should we fail to care for the earth. Bruce later encountered the film, “From the Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers' Warning,” by Alan Ereira. In a rare visit, deep into the mountains of Columbia where a tribal culture lived, the Kogi, or “caretakers of the earth” as they call themselves, the filmmaker tells their story; a warning to us “younger brother,” should we not take care of the earth, our mother.  View Clip


In 2003, Bruce won a scholarship to the Vancouver Film School. After graduation, Bruce determined to make a documentary film, one that expressed his lifelong study of the earth, the wisdom of ancient people, and heed the warning he himself received, to remind mankind of the true cost of the loss of the sacred.

During the making of the film, Bruce was fortunate to make contact with a Dr. Juan Carlo’s, a doctor working in the village at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the home of the Kogi. In December 2006, Bruce received the invitation to come, visit the Kogi, and Wiwa Mamos; they would give him an interview for his film. Bruce spent four weeks in the village with Dr. Carlos, waiting and preparing to make the trek deep into the mountains, as he had seen Alan Ereira do so many years ago, himself to meet the Elder Brother, Mamo Ramon. Christmas Eve Mamo Ramon sent a message for Bruce to come. An 8-hour journey ensued, up the vertical mountain grade, through the Guachaca river basin, to Kemakumake Village.

As the group made their way through the rugged mountainous terrain, a rectangular shaped box carried by Kogi villagers, snaked down the narrow, precipitous incline past Bruce, and his guides. Later, crouched in a smoke-filled, mosquito-choked ceremonial hut with Dr. Carlos as translator, Bruce learned from Mamo Ramón that his son was in that box. Bitten by a deadly viper, he died only two days’ earlier. Mamo Ramon further confessed to yet another loss, just six months prior, another of his sons to Dengue Fever.
